Important information
It’s crucial that all forklift truck operators maintain an appropriate level of medical fitness for their role.
Medical assessments are recommended before employment and periodically throughout their careers. According to guidance from the Health and Safety Executive (HSG6), operators should undergo medical screenings at age 40 and then every five years until 65. After 65, annual assessments are advised to ensure continued fitness for the job.
This approach helps safeguard both the operators and their working environment by ensuring they meet the necessary health standards.

You can modify or cancel your booking, but we require at least 48 hours’ notice. If less than 48 hours’ notice is given, we won’t be able to offer a refund for the appointment.
Additional information
The fitness standard for operating a lift truck is similar to that required for a Group 1 driving licence (a full UK driver’s licence).
However, individual assessments ensure that people with disabilities are not disadvantaged, as many have developed compensatory skills. Adjustments to work equipment, in line with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, can help disabled individuals operate a lift truck safely.
Nonetheless, the ability to perform competently in an emergency situation must always be considered as part of the assessment process.
Key considerations - forklift drivers
General fitness: Operators should typically have full movement of their trunk, neck, and limbs, with normal agility. Exceptions can be made for experienced operators with disabilities after proper retraining. A stable mental state is required, and dependency on alcohol or drugs is disqualifying.
Vision: Good spatial judgment is necessary, typically requiring both eyes, though monocular vision may suffice in some cases. Distance vision should meet road-driving standards, if you wear glasses, please bring an up-to-date report from your optician.
Hearing: Hearing instructions and signals is important, but deafness may not disqualify someone if assessed properly. A forced whisper test will be conducted to assess hearing.
Epilepsy: Operators must meet the same criteria as for an ordinary driving licence, but any new seizures need medical reassessment. Flashing beacons can trigger epileptic fits.
Please note: in the event that you do not pass the medical we cannot refund the cost.
Additional information
