Who needs an asbestos medical?
According to UK regulations, anyone performing notifiable non-licensed or licensed work with asbestos must undergo regular medical evaluations. These medicals are designed to monitor the impact of asbestos exposure on your health and are typically required every two to three years, depending on the level of risk in your role.
You’ll need to refer to HSE (Health and Safety Executive) guidelines to determine whether your work is classified as licensed or non-licensed. Whichever category you fall into, our team at OneMedicine is fully equipped to conduct the necessary medical assessments to keep you in compliance and safeguard your long-term health.
Why asbestos medicals are important
Asbestos exposure can lead to serious respiratory conditions, some of which are life-threatening. The main risks include:
- Lung cancer
- Mesothelioma – a type of cancer affecting the lining of the lungs
- Asbestosis – non-malignant scarring of lung tissue
- Non-malignant pleural disease – affecting the outer lining of the lungs
Given the severity of these risks, asbestos-related medicals are crucial for detecting any early signs of asbestos-related health issues and preventing long-term complications. Early detection is key to maintaining your health and preventing potentially fatal conditions.
What to expect during your asbestos medical
Your asbestos medical at OneMedicine includes a comprehensive health assessment and a lung function test, designed to assess your respiratory health and overall fitness for working with asbestos. The assessment typically takes around 45 minutes and can be conducted either at our clinic in Birmingham or on-site, depending on your needs.
For licensed asbestos medicals, our team will guide you through the legal documents required to ensure compliance with asbestos control regulations. For non-licensed medicals, we’ll ask you to complete a consent form.
