What are blood borne viruses?
BBVs are viruses that can spread through blood-to-blood contact. The most common include:
- HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) – A virus that affects the immune system and, if untreated, can lead to AIDS. Test is for HIV I & II and p24 Ag. For most patients no detection at 6 weeks post exposure, gives high confidence. A follow up negative test at 12 weeks is considered conclusive for ruling out both HIV-1 and HIV-2
- Hepatitis B – A liver infection that can be short-term or develop into a chronic condition. Test is for Hep B Surface Ag, Hep B Surface Ab, Hepatitis B Core IgG/IgM
- Hepatitis C – A liver virus that, without treatment, can cause long-term damage. Test for Hep C Antibody.
Who Should Get Tested?
You may want to consider a BBV test if you:
- Have had unprotected sex.
- Have shared needles or injecting equipment.
- Have had a tattoo or piercing done with unsterilised tools.
- Are pregnant or planning to start a family.
- Work in a healthcare or high-risk setting.
- Have received medical treatment in a country where BBVs are more common.
