Liver Function Blood Test
Your liver is one of the hardest-working organs in your body, helping to process nutrients, filter toxins, and keep everything in balance. A liver function test is a simple blood test that checks key markers to make sure your liver is doing its job properly. It’s a great way to monitor your health, catch potential issues early, and give your liver the care it deserves.
Cost
- Liver function test £55
(includes phlebotomy appointment) - Focused GP appointment (15min) £75
- Standard GP appointment (30min) £120
What Does a Liver Function Test Measure?
This test looks at important substances in your blood that reflect how well your liver is working:
- ALT & AST – Enzymes that help process proteins. High levels may suggest liver inflammation or damage.
- ALP & GGT – Enzymes linked to bile flow. Elevated levels could indicate blockages, liver disease, or the effects of alcohol.
- Bilirubin – A substance produced when red blood cells break down. Too much can cause jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) and may point to liver issues.
- Albumin – A protein made by the liver that helps keep fluid levels balanced. Low levels can be a sign of reduced liver function.
- Prothrombin time (optional add-on £33) – Prothrombin time, a sensitive test of your livers ability to make proteins.
Why Should You Get a Liver Function Test?
There are many good reasons to check in on your liver health:
- You’re feeling off – Fatigue, itching, abdominal pain, bloating, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin and eyes could be signs of liver stress.
- You have a history of liver conditions – If you’ve had liver disease, drink alcohol regularly, or have conditions that can affect the liver, regular monitoring is key.
- You’re taking medications – Some medicines can impact liver function, so routine testing helps keep things in check.
- You want to stay ahead of your health – Catching potential liver issues early gives you more control over your well-being.
