What is a musculoskeletal ultrasound?
This scan uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of soft tissues and joints. Unlike X-rays, which focus on bones, ultrasound is ideal for assessing muscles, tendons, and ligaments—making it a powerful tool for diagnosing sprains, tears, tendonitis, and more.
A small handheld device called a transducer is moved over the affected area, sending sound waves that bounce off tissues. The real-time images help pinpoint the cause of pain, stiffness, or restricted movement.
Why should you consider a musculoskeletal ultrasound?
If you’re experiencing joint pain, muscle stiffness, or limited mobility, this scan can identify the underlying issue—helping to prevent further injury and guide recovery. It’s especially valuable for:
- Tendon injuries – Including rotator cuff tears and Achilles tendonitis.
- Muscle strains or tears – Common in sports injuries.
- Joint inflammation – Conditions like arthritis.
- Ligament injuries – Caused by trauma or overuse.
- Bursitis – Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs in joints.
- Post-surgical recovery – Tracking healing and rehabilitation progress.
With no radiation and real-time results, musculoskeletal ultrasound is a safe and effective tool for both diagnosis and treatment planning.
How is a musculoskeletal ultrasound performed?
This quick and painless procedure is designed for comfort and efficiency:
- Preparation – No special preparation is needed. You can continue with your normal routine before and after the scan.
- The Scan – Depending on the area being examined, you’ll sit or lie down. A cool gel is applied to the skin, and the transducer is moved over the area to capture real-time images. You may be asked to move the joint or muscle slightly to assess function.
- Duration – The scan typically takes 15 to 30 minutes.
- After the Scan – You can resume normal activities immediately. Your doctor will review the images and discuss the results with you.
