Resting ECG
At OneMedicine, your heart health is our top priority. An Electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the most essential diagnostic tools in assessing your heart’s health. Whether you’re experiencing chest pain, shortness of breath, or have a known history of heart issues, an ECG can provide critical insights into the electrical activity of your heart.
What is an ECG
An Electrocardiogram (ECG) is a non-invasive test that records the electrical impulses of your heart at rest. Small electrodes are placed on the surface of your skin, which capture your hearts electrical activity and produce an ECG tracing. This tracing is a detailed graph that displays the rhythm and pattern of your heartbeats, allowing Dr. Ibrar Ahmed insights into the function of your heart.
This test helps identify various heart conditions, including:
- Arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats)
- Heart attacks (old and new)
- Abnormalities in heart structure (e.g., thickening of heart muscle)
It is a simple, painless procedure that usually takes only a few minutes to perform, making it a routine and effective part of cardiovascular assessments.
Cost
- In Clinic Adult (age over 16y) Resting ECG and Interpretation £90
- At Home Adult (age over 16y) Resting ECG and Interpretation £225
When should you get an ECG
A resting ECG is a fundamental test that can be performed as part of your routine heart health check-up. It’s also recommended if you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms:
- Chest pain
- Palpitations
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness or fainting spells
In some cases, individuals with risk factors for heart disease—such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or a family history of cardiovascular conditions—may be advised to undergo ECG testing as a preventative measure. It is also often required before undergoing surgery or starting new medications to ensure your heart is functioning properly.
For those engaged in high-intensity physical activities or sports, an ECG can help detect any underlying heart issues that might pose a risk during exertion.

Advanced ECG testing for a more comprehensive diagnosis
We offer two types of ECG tests, depending on your symptoms and needs:
Resting ECG: This standard ECG is performed while you are lying still. It is typically part of routine check-ups or when initial symptoms, such as chest pain or palpitations, appear. This test assesses your heart’s electrical activity at rest and can provide a baseline for further investigations.
Exercise ECG (Stress Test): For patients who experience symptoms primarily during physical activity, an exercise ECG may be required. This test monitors your heart while you walk on a treadmill, gradually increasing the intensity. It helps evaluate how your heart responds to stress, making it useful in diagnosing conditions such as angina or other forms of heart disease.
