Why do you need spirometry?
At OneMedicine, we use no-resistance to flow, spirometer technology, which allows us to accurately assess how well your lungs are functioning. If you’re experiencing wheezing, shortness of breath, or a persistent cough, this simple test offers valuable insights into your respiratory health.
Spirometry is especially helpful for diagnosing and managing conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other lung-related illnesses—giving you the information you need to breathe with confidence.
Why Spirometry Might Be Right for You
Spirometry is a simple, non-invasive test that helps assess how well your lungs are working. It’s recommended for various reasons, especially if you’re experiencing breathing difficulties like chest tightness, wheezing, or shortness of breath.
What Can Spirometry Do?
- Diagnose conditions such as asthma, COPD, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis
- Monitor ongoing lung conditions and check how well your treatment is working
- Assess lung function before surgery or other medical procedures
- Lung age calculation
- Create a baseline for long-term health monitoring if you’re at risk of lung disease
If you’ve noticed changes in your breathing, spirometry can help identify any underlying lung issues and guide you toward the right care plan.
Cost
- Routine spirometry with a GP £120
- Spirometry and reversibility assessment with a GP £160
What can spirometry detect?
- Asthma: It helps measure how much and how quickly air can be exhaled, which can determine the presence and severity of asthma.
- COPD: Spirometry is key in detecting airflow obstruction, a characteristic of COPD, helping assess the progression of the disease.
- Chronic bronchitis: It can show the extent of airway blockage caused by chronic bronchitis.
- Emphysema: This test can reveal reduced lung function, a common feature of emphysema.
- Pulmonary fibrosis: Spirometry can detect reduced lung volumes, helping identify this and other lung conditions.
After the test
Upon completion of your spirometry test, you will receive both a digital and paper report detailing your results. These reports will provide an overview of your lung, your forced expiratory volume (FEV1 and forced vital capacity (FVC), which are essential for diagnosing respiratory conditions.
You will also have the option to schedule a follow-up consultation with Dr Ahmed to review results in detail. He will explain the significance of the numbers for your health and recommend any necessary treatments or lifestyle adjustments. Your results are confidential, and we always prioritise your privacy.
