What is a mammogram?

A mammogram uses low-dose X-rays to capture detailed images of the breast tissue. It is commonly used as a screening tool to detect breast cancer and can also be used to investigate any unusual changes in the breast, such as lumps, pain, or nipple discharge. Mammograms are highly effective at identifying small growths or changes that may not be felt during a physical exam, making them essential for early detection.

There are two main types of mammograms:

  • Screening mammogram: Used for routine breast cancer screening in women without any symptoms.
  • Diagnostic mammogram: Performed when there are specific concerns, such as a lump or abnormal findings from a previous screening.

Why Consider a Mammogram?

Mammograms are essential for early detection, especially for women over 40 or those with risk factors such as a family history of breast cancer. Regular screening allows for:

  • Early identification of breast cancer, when treatment is most effective.
  • Monitoring breast tissue over time for subtle changes.
  • Clarifying abnormalities found during physical exams or other imaging tests.

Even if you feel healthy, routine mammograms help detect concerns before symptoms develop.

When Should You Get a Mammogram?

A mammogram is recommended if you:

  • Are over 40 and want to stay proactive about breast health.
  • Have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors.
  • Notice changes in your breasts, such as lumps, pain, or discharge.
  • Are post-menopausal and due for a routine health check-up.

What can a mammogram detect?

A mammogram provides detailed insights into breast health, identifying:

  • Breast cancer – Detecting small tumours before they can be felt.
  • Cysts – Fluid-filled sacs that are often non-cancerous but may cause discomfort.
  • Calcifications – Tiny calcium deposits that can indicate early cancer or benign conditions.
  • Fibroadenomas – Benign breast lumps commonly found in younger women.

By detecting these conditions early, mammograms reduce the need for more invasive treatments and improve outcomes.

Are mammograms safe?

Yes. Mammograms use low-dose X-rays, and the benefits of early detection far outweigh the minimal radiation exposure. They are safe for women of all ages, though routine screening is most commonly recommended for women over 40.

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, let your doctor know—an alternative imaging method may be suggested.

How is a mammogram performed?

A mammogram is quick, simple, and non-invasive:

  • Preparation – You’ll remove clothing from the waist up and wear a gown. Avoid deodorant or lotion on the day of the test, as they can affect imaging.
  • The Scan – Each breast is gently positioned between two plates, applying light pressure to spread out the tissue for a clearer image. The scan takes about 20 minutes.
  • After the Scan – You can return to normal activities immediately. Your doctor will review the images and discuss the results with you.
