What is an ultrasound scan?

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create clear, detailed images of your internal organs, tissues, and blood vessels. These sound waves bounce off structures in your body, forming visuals that appear instantly on a screen.

It’s completely painless, radiation-free, and safe for everyone—including pregnant women and children. Ultrasounds are often used to check the abdomen, pelvis, blood vessels, and soft tissues, making them a trusted and essential diagnostic tool.

Why might you need an ultrasound scan?

Ultrasound scans are quick, effective, and commonly used to diagnose and monitor many conditions, including:

● Abdominal pain or discomfort
● Kidney stones
● Liver disease
● Gallstones or gallbladder issues
● Blood clots or poor circulation
● Pregnancy monitoring and prenatal care

They’re also used to guide treatments and procedures like biopsies—ensuring you get the most accurate and informed care possible.

What can an ultrasound scan detect?

Ultrasound scans provide valuable insights into your health, helping detect:

Tumours or cysts in organs such as the liver, kidneys, or ovaries.
Gallstones or kidney stones, which may cause pain or blockages.
Blood clots or circulation issues in veins and arteries.
Soft tissue injuries, including muscle, tendon, and ligament damage.
Fetal development and pregnancy health.

With clear, real-time images, doctors can diagnose conditions early and create the best treatment plan for you.

What to expect during your ultrasound scan

The procedure is simple, comfortable, and non-invasive:

Preparation – Depending on the type of scan, you might be asked to drink water (for pelvic ultrasounds) or fast for a few hours (for abdominal ultrasounds). Your doctor will give you specific instructions before your appointment.
During the scan – You’ll lie down while a friendly technician applies a warm gel to your skin. A small handheld device (transducer) will glide over the area, capturing real-time images.
Duration – Most scans take 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the area being examined.
After the scan – There’s no downtime! You can get back to your normal routine straight away. Your doctor will review the images and discuss the results with you, usually within a few days.
