South Africa Visa Medical Examination – What to Expect
Since July 2026 South Africa no longer asks for a medical report with most temporary visa and permanent residence applications, and the chest X-ray report was dropped in 2023. Check with the High Commission or VFS before booking. If your employer, school or agent has still asked for the medical certificate (form BI-811), we complete, sign and stamp it at your appointment
Physical Examination
A full clinical assessment will be performed by a doctor to ensure you’re fit to travel and work or study in S. Africa. This includes:
✔ Height and weight measurements
✔ Vision (visual acuity) testing
✔ Systematic examination of:
- Respiratory system
- Cardiovascular system
- Abdominal system
- Neurological system
- Musculoskeletal system
What you need to bring
- Completed medical and registration forms
- Your passport
- Glasses or contact lenses (if worn)
- Copies of any significant hospital letters, abnormal smear results, or relevant medical documents
Important information and tips for your visa medical
- Timing and scheduling: It’s best to book your visa medical well in advance of your planned travel date to allow time for any additional tests or follow-up appointments.
- Document preparation: Ensure that all necessary documents are completed and brought to your appointment to avoid any delays. Missing documents can result in rescheduling your medical.
- After your medical: Once all tests are completed, your results and final medical report will be prepared within 4 working days. You will receive a PDF copy via email and the original by recorded delivery.
- Refund policy: Unfortunately, we cannot refund the cost of your medical if your visa application is not successful. Please ensure all other visa requirements are met before scheduling your medical.
