How Does Cryotherapy Work?

During the treatment,  the Doctor will spray or apply liquid nitrogen directly to the area. It might feel really cold for a few seconds, but most people find it manageable. The treated spot turns white, then slowly thaws. Over the next few days, a scab forms, and eventually, it falls off—revealing fresh, healthy skin underneath. Some stubborn spots may need more than one session.

After treatment, your doctor will give you simple care instructions, like keeping the area dry until a scab forms and applying a little Vaseline if needed. Try not to pick at the scab—it’s tempting, but leaving it alone helps prevent scarring!

Like any treatment, cryotherapy has some possible side effects, like mild pain, redness, swelling, or blisters. In rare cases, it can cause scarring or slight changes in skin color. While it works well for most people, some growths might need more than one treatment or could return over time.

What Can Cryotherapy Treat?

Cryotherapy is a great option for treating a variety of common skin concerns, including:

Warts – Common warts, plantar warts (on the soles of the feet), and genital warts caused by HPV.
Skin Tags – Small, harmless skin growths that often show up in folds of skin.
Actinic Keratoses – Precancerous spots caused by sun exposure.
Seborrheic Keratoses – Non-cancerous, waxy growths that may look “stuck on.”
Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma – A mild, early form of skin cancer.
Bowen’s Disease – A very early form of squamous cell carcinoma.
Other Skin Lesions – Certain benign moles or unusual skin growths.

Cryotherapy is a quick, straightforward way to remove unwanted skin growths and keep your skin looking and feeling its best. It’s a small treatment that can make a big difference! ❄️
