STi Testing Birmingham

Private STi testing in Birmingham: same day, confidential, from £35

A free, private appointment with a GP at our Kings Heath clinic. You decide together which tests you need, the samples are taken there and then, and you pay only for the tests taken. Results for most tests are back within 24 hours. If a result is positive, treatment can be arranged by the same GP as a separate service, so you are never left with a result and nowhere to go. Nothing is shared with your NHS GP unless you ask.

FREEappointment, pay only for tests

Includes: a confidential consultation with a GP, help choosing the right tests for your situation, samples taken at the appointment, and your results explained. Not included: treatment. Test prices cover testing only. If a result is positive, the GP will quote the cost of treatment and any medication before prescribing anything.

STi tests and prices

Prices are per test, with no appointment fee on top. Panels are the best value if you want several infections checked at once. If you already know what you need, each row can also be booked and paid online. These prices are for testing only; treatment, if you need it, is charged separately.

Not sure which to choose? Book the free appointment. The GP will ask about the type of contact and when it was, and recommend the smallest set of tests that answers your question. Most people with no symptoms and a new partner need Step 1 or Step 2; a full check-up after several partners is STi Complete.

How soon after sex can I be tested?

Every infection has a window period: the time after exposure before a test can reliably detect it. A negative result taken earlier is reassuring but not final, and the GP will tell you if a repeat is needed.

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea 2 weeks after exposure
HIV (4th-generation test) 45 days after exposure
Syphilis 12 weeks after exposure
Hepatitis B and C 12 weeks after exposure
Herpes antibodies 12 weeks; a swab of a sore can be tested straight away
Trichomonas, mycoplasma, ureaplasma 2 weeks after exposure
If you may have been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours, do not wait for a test: call us or go to your nearest sexual health clinic or A&E today, because emergency medication (PEP) can prevent infection if started in time.

What happens at your appointment

  1. Book online and pick a time, often the same day. The appointment is private and takes about 20 minutes.
  2. A short, judgement-free conversation with the GP about symptoms, if any, the type of contact and the timing, so the right tests are chosen.
  3. Samples are taken there and then. A first-catch urine sample for men, a self-taken vaginal swab for women, a throat or rectal swab where relevant, and a blood sample for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis. Try not to pass urine for an hour before the appointment.
  4. Results by secure email, most within 24 hours. The GP explains them. If anything is positive, treatment can be prescribed by the same GP, usually the same day. Treatment is a separate service with its own charge, which is quoted to you before anything is prescribed. Partner advice is included with your results at no cost.

Confidentiality

Your results are sent to you and to no one else. Nothing goes to your NHS GP unless you ask us to send it. The appointment appears on your card statement only as the clinic name.

Treatment is separate from testing

The test prices on this page pay for the laboratory tests and the GP's time in choosing them and explaining the results. They do not include treatment. If a test comes back positive, the GP will tell you what treatment is needed and what it costs, including any medication, and you choose whether to have it here or free of charge at an NHS sexual health clinic. There is no obligation to be treated with us.

Questions people ask

How much does a private STi test cost in Birmingham?

The appointment is free and you pay only for the tests taken: from £35 for a single HIV test, £100 for the chlamydia and gonorrhoea panel, up to £295 for STi Complete, which checks 13 markers. There is no consultation fee and no charge for the results being explained. Treatment is not included in the test price; if you need it, the cost is quoted separately before anything is prescribed.

Is treatment included in the price of the test?

No. The prices on this page are for testing only. If a result is positive, treatment is a separate service: the GP will explain what is needed and quote the cost, including any medication, before prescribing. You can also take your result to an NHS sexual health clinic and be treated there for free.

Can I get an STi test the same day?

Usually, yes. The online booking shows live appointment times at the Kings Heath clinic, and same-day or next-day slots are normally available. Most results are back within 24 hours of the sample reaching the laboratory.

How soon after unprotected sex should I get tested?

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea can be tested 2 weeks after exposure, HIV at 45 days with the 4th-generation test we use, and syphilis, hepatitis and herpes antibodies at 12 weeks. A test done earlier can still be useful but a negative result is not final until the window period has passed.

Do I need symptoms to be tested?

No. Most chlamydia and many gonorrhoea infections cause no symptoms at all, which is why testing after a new partner is recommended whether or not you feel anything.

What samples are needed?

A first-catch urine sample for men and a self-taken vaginal swab for women cover chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomonas and mycoplasma. HIV, syphilis and hepatitis are blood tests. A throat or rectal swab is added where the type of contact makes it relevant. Everything is taken at the appointment.

Will my NHS GP or anyone else find out?

No. Your results are confidential and are sent only to you. We do not write to your NHS GP unless you ask us to, and nothing is added to your NHS record.

Can you treat me if a test is positive?

Yes. The appointment is with a GP, so treatment for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomonas, mycoplasma, syphilis and herpes can be prescribed, usually the same day, and partner notification advice is given. Treatment is charged separately from the tests and the cost is explained before anything is prescribed. Where specialist care is needed, for example a new HIV diagnosis, we refer you quickly and support you through it.

Is this the same as a GUM clinic?

It offers the same tests and treatment as an NHS sexual health (GUM) clinic, but privately: you choose the time, there is no queue or waiting list, you see a GP in a private room, and results are fast. The NHS service remains free if waiting is not a problem for you.

Do you offer STi tests for men and women?

Yes. The tests are the same; only the sample differs. Men give a urine sample, women a self-taken vaginal swab, and throat and rectal swabs are available to anyone who needs them.

Can I have an STi test on my period?

Yes. A period does not affect the urine sample, the blood tests or a swab for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomonas and mycoplasma, so there is no need to wait or rebook. If you would rather not have a swab taken during your period, the GP can take a urine sample instead.

Does a smear test check for STis?

No. A cervical screening (smear) test looks for HPV and changes in the cells of the cervix. It does not test for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HIV, syphilis or any other STi, so a normal smear result does not mean you are clear of infection.

Are home STi test kits accurate?

A good laboratory kit is accurate if the sample is taken properly and at the right time, but many kits are blood-spot or swab tests done without advice, and a wrongly timed or poorly taken sample gives a false reassurance. At the clinic the GP checks the timing, takes the samples correctly, adds the throat or rectal swabs a kit leaves out, and can arrange treatment if a result is positive.

Why pay when NHS STi tests are free?

NHS sexual health clinics are free and good. People come to us when they want a specific time rather than a queue or a postal kit, results within 24 hours, a GP who can arrange treatment without a second appointment elsewhere, or privacy, because nothing is recorded on their NHS record. The appointment itself is free; you pay only for the tests you choose, and treatment, if needed, is priced separately.

Does a blood test show STis?

Blood tests detect HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C and herpes antibodies. Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomonas, mycoplasma and ureaplasma are found by PCR on a urine sample or swab, not in blood, which is why a full screen uses both.
