Mounjaro: Your Weekly Injection Made Simple

Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection to help with weight loss. It contains tirzepatide, which gently reduces your appetite so you can stick to your calorie goals. Studies show that the highest dose can help people lose up to 22.5% of their starting weight.

How to Use Mounjaro

The pen
Mounjaro comes in a pre-filled pen with 4 doses — one each week. You can inject yourself or have someone help.

Where to Inject

Pick one of these spots for your injection:

  • Stomach (abdomen)
  • Upper thigh
  • Back of upper arm (only if someone helps you)

You can use the same area each week but rotate the exact spot. Or switch areas week to week — for example: stomach week 1, thigh week 2, arm week 3.

Quick tips:

  • Keep injections at least a finger’s width apart.
  • Stay 5cm away from your belly button.
  • Rotate spots so you don’t inject the same place more than once every 4 weeks.

Getting Ready

Before you start:

  • Read the information leaflet.
  • Choose a day and time that works for you — consistency helps.

Before each injection:

  1. Wash your hands well.
  2. Check the pen’s expiry date and that the liquid looks clear.
  3. Grab a new needle.

Injecting Mounjaro — Step by Step

Prime your pen:

  1. Wipe the red seal with a swab.
  2. Attach a new needle and twist until secure.
  3. Remove the outer needle cover and keep it safe. Discard the inner cover.
  4. Turn the dose knob until you hear two clicks.
  5. Hold the pen needle-up and tap gently.
  6. Push the knob to release a little medicine. Count to 5. The dose window should reset to 0.

If no medicine comes out, repeat priming up to 3 times. If it still doesn’t work, try a new needle once. Still no luck? Contact your doctor.

Inject:

  1. Choose your spot. No need to pinch skin.
  2. Turn the dose knob to ‘1’ for your dose.
  3. Insert the needle, making sure you can see the dose window.
  4. Push the knob all the way and hold for 5 seconds.
  5. Check the dose window shows ‘0’. Then remove the needle.
  6. If it doesn’t show ‘0’, insert the needle again and finish the dose (don’t redial).

After Injection

  • Replace the outer needle cover carefully.
  • Dispose of the needle safely in a sharps bin.
  • Put the pen cap back on and store your pen.

Storing Mounjaro

  • Unopened pens last up to 24 months in the fridge. Always check the expiry date.
  • After opening, use your pen within 30 days — effectiveness may drop after that.
  • You can keep a used pen at room temperature (up to 30°C) for 30 days, away from light. Or keep it refrigerated (2–8°C) — no 30-day limit if refrigerated.

Injection Site Care

Some redness, bruising, or slight swelling is normal. To ease discomfort:

  • Rotate your injection spots weekly.
  • Clean your skin before injecting.
  • Use an ice pack before injecting to numb the area.
  • Apply a cold compress or take painkillers if needed.
  • Antihistamine tablets or creams may help with itching.

What to Watch For

A small number of people get mild skin reactions like redness, itching, or swelling. If you notice severe pain, swelling, or redness, contact your doctor right away. This might be an allergic reaction.
