Do Hay Fever Injections Work?
Many patients with severe hay fever symptoms report significant relief after receiving a steroid injection. It works by dampening the immune system’s response, reducing inflammation and allergy symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, and eye irritation.
However, the medical community remains divided. Some studies suggest the benefits can be quick and effective — especially for those who don’t respond well to tablets or sprays. Others point out that the effects may be short-lived and the risks potentially significant, including immune suppression, weight gain, sleep issues, and rare but serious complications like septal perforation or tissue thinning.
Why Did the NHS Stop Offering Steroid injection?
The NHS stopped routinely offering Steroid injections for hay fever in 2018. The decision was based on safety concerns and the lack of strong evidence for long-term benefit in treating seasonal allergies. A corticosteroid, can weaken the immune system, potentially increasing the risk of infections such as flu, shingles, and chickenpox. The NHS also cited the potential for serious side effects, including:
- Weight gain
- Mood changes or trouble sleeping
- Redness or pain at the injection site
- Stomach upset or headaches
- Rare systemic complications
Given these concerns, the NHS now advises exploring other treatments first — especially for mild to moderate hay fever.
Can I Still Get the Injection From My GP?
In most cases, GPs no longer offer Steroid injections as a routine treatment for hay fever on the NHS. However, in very select circumstances — where symptoms are severe and resistant to other treatments — a GP may still consider it on a case-by-case basis.
