HIV Test Options at OneMedicine
4th Generation HIV Test (HIV 1 & 2 + p24 antigen)
Detects HIV antibodies and p24 antigen
Reliable from 28 days after exposure
Gold-standard test used in UK sexual health clinics
Understanding the HIV Window Period
The window period is the time between potential exposure and when a test can reliably detect HIV.
Most 4th generation tests are reliable at 28 days
A final confirmatory test may be recommended at 6 weeks for complete reassurance
We will explain this clearly during your appointment so you can test with confidence.

PrEP and PEP Advice
PrEP is a highly effective way to protect HIV-negative individuals from acquiring HIV. When taken correctly, it significantly reduces the risk of infection and puts you firmly in control of your sexual health.
PrEP is particularly recommended if:
You have a partner who is HIV-positive
You sometimes have sex without a condom
You feel you may be at higher ongoing risk
PrEP works by stopping HIV from establishing itself in the body if exposure occurs.
How to Take PrEP
There are two safe and effective ways to take PrEP. Your doctor will help you choose the option that suits you best.
✔ On-Demand PrEP (2-1-1 method – for anal sex only)
Take 2 tablets between 2–24 hours before sex
Take 1 tablet 24 hours later
Take 1 final tablet 24 hours after that
This method is suitable for people who do not have sex regularly and can plan ahead.
✔ Daily PrEP
Take 1 tablet every day
Provides continuous protection without needing to plan around sex
Staying Protected
If you have been taking daily PrEP for at least 7 days, you remain protected even if you miss the occasional dose
For daily PrEP, taking at least 6 doses in the past week is considered protective
If you are unsure about missed doses or when to stop PrEP, continue taking it and seek advice
We’re always here to guide you.
Before Starting PrEP
Before prescribing PrEP, we carry out a few simple and essential checks to make sure it is safe and appropriate for you:
✔ HIV test – to confirm you are HIV-negative
✔ Hepatitis B test
✔ Kidney function blood test
These tests are straightforward and help ensure PrEP is used safely.

HIV Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) in Birmingham
If you believe you may have been exposed to HIV, it’s important to act quickly.
PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a 28-day course of medication that can prevent HIV infection if started within 72 hours of potential exposure. The sooner PEP is started, the more effective it is.
PEP is used in emergency situations such as:
Unprotected sex with a partner whose HIV status is unknown or positive
Condom failure
Needle-stick or blood-to-blood exposure
Accessing PEP
At OneMedicine, we can provide urgent clinical assessment and help you access PEP as quickly as possible, where appropriate.
PEP is also available through the NHS, free of charge, at:
Sexual health (GUM) clinics
Accident & Emergency (A&E) departments
If there is any delay in accessing care, attending A&E immediately is recommended.

Reducing your risk of HIV
Regular testing and safe sexual practices are the most effective ways to reduce your risk of HIV. Using condoms consistently and correctly during sexual activity is the best way to protect yourself from both HIV and other STIs. Regular HIV testing allows you to know your status and seek treatment early, improving long-term health outcomes.
