Trichomoniasis : Common, Treatable, and Often Overlooked

Trichomoniasis, or “trich,” is a very common and completely treatable sexually transmitted infection (STI). Many people who have it don’t even know—they feel fine and show no symptoms. But if you do get diagnosed, don’t worry! Treatment is straightforward, and you’ll be back to feeling your best in no time.

Trichomoniasis is caused by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. It can infect both men and women, often affecting the lower genital tract in women (vulva, vagina, cervix, or urethra) and the urethra in men. While some people may experience symptoms, many do not know they are infected.

Trichomoniasis is spread through unprotected vaginal sex with an infected partner. The parasite passes from a penis to a vagina or between two vaginas during sexual activity. It is less common for trich to infect other body parts like the mouth, hands, or anus.

The best way to prevent trichomoniasis and other STIs is to use condoms during vaginal, anal, or oral sex, and to be in a mutually monogamous relationship where both partners have been tested and are free from infection. Having open and honest conversations about STIs with new partners is also important to manage sexual health.

It’s important to consider getting tested for trichomoniasis if you:

  • Are sexually active and have had unprotected vaginal sex with a new or multiple partners.
  • Are experiencing symptoms such as genital itching, unusual discharge, or discomfort during urination.
  • Have a partner who has been diagnosed with trichomoniasis or shows symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection (STI).
  • Are pregnant, as untreated trichomoniasis can increase the risk of complications like early delivery or low birth weight in babies.
  • Have a history of STIs, which can increase your risk of contracting trichomoniasis.

Signs and symptoms of trichomoniasis

About 70% of people with trichomoniasis do not experience any symptoms. However, when symptoms do appear, they can range from mild irritation to severe inflammation.

Men may experience:

  • Itching or irritation inside the penis
  • Burning sensation when urinating or after ejaculation
  • Discharge from the penis

Women may experience:

  • Itching, burning, or soreness of the genitals
  • Discomfort when urinating
  • A clear, white, yellow, or greenish vaginal discharge with an unpleasant fishy odour

Without treatment, trichomoniasis can persist for months or even years, and it may make sexual activity uncomfortable.

Complications of trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis can increase your risk of contracting or spreading other STIs, such as HIV, due to genital inflammation. For pregnant individuals, trichomoniasis can lead to early delivery or babies born with low birth weight.

Accurate Testing and Effective Treatment

Trichomoniasis Test – £140

Trichomoniasis can’t be diagnosed based on symptoms alone—a lab test is essential for confirmation. At OneMedicine, we offer fast, typically same day result, reliable testing to ensure prompt diagnosis and the right treatment.

✔ Urine and swab sample
Your sample is tested not only for Trichomonas vaginalis, but also for other infections that are often found alongside it, including:

  • Chlamydia

  • Gonorrhoea

  • Genital herpes (HSV-1 & HSV-2)

  • Syphilis

  • Mycoplasma hominis

  • Mycoplasma genitalium

  • Ureaplasma

Why test for Trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis is the most common curable STI, and it’s easily treated with a short course of oral medication. Treatment is safe during pregnancy.

However, reinfection occurs in around 1 in 5 people within 3 months, so it’s crucial that all sexual partners are treated at the same time.

To prevent reinfection:

  • Avoid sex until you and your partner(s) have completed treatment

  • Follow up if symptoms persist or recur
