Taking Charge of your Health
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men, yet there is currently no official nationwide screening program in the UK. However, early detection remains key in managing and treating prostate cancer effectively. At OneMedicine, we offer a variety of screening options to help detect prostate cancer early, particularly for men over the age of 50 or those who may be at higher risk.
Cost
Free Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test £75
PSA Profile (Free PSA to Total PSA ratio) £115
(Either with phlebotomy appointment or within GP appointment)
Standard GP Appointment (30min) £120
Symptoms and when to seek screening
If you experience any of the following symptoms, it’s crucial to consult a Doctor for a prostate cancer assessment:
- Frequent urination, especially at night.
- Difficulty starting urination or prolonged straining.
- Weak urine flow or the sensation of incomplete bladder emptying.
- Presence of blood in urine or semen.
These symptoms may be indicative of an underlying issue with the prostate, including enlargement or potential cancer. While these symptoms may be caused by non-cancerous conditions, it is important to consult with a specialist to rule out prostate cancer as a cause.
Prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing
A Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test is one of the primary screening tools for detecting prostate cancer. PSA is a protein produced by both cancerous and non-cancerous tissue in the prostate. Men over 50 are generally recommended to undergo PSA testing if they exhibit symptoms or have a higher risk of prostate cancer due to family history. However, interpreting PSA results can sometimes be challenging, as elevated levels do not always indicate cancer and may be influenced by other factors, such as benign prostate conditions or infections.
At OneMedicine, we guide you through the PSA testing process and provide clear explanations of your results. If further evaluation is needed, Dr Ahmed will discuss additional diagnostic options.
Advanced diagnostic testing: MRI & Biopsies
If the PSA results suggest further investigation is necessary, we offer additional diagnostic procedures, including:
Multiparametric MRI: This advanced imaging technique provides detailed images of the prostate, helping to identify suspicious areas. It’s particularly useful for detecting clinically significant cancers while minimizing the need for unnecessary biopsies or overdiagnosis of low-risk cases.
Biopsies: In cases where MRI results show suspicious areas, a biopsy may be performed to obtain a tissue sample for further examination. This can confirm the presence of cancer and help determine the best course of treatment.
These diagnostic tools, along with Dr Ahmeds considerable experience, ensure that your screening process is both thorough and tailored to your specific needs, improving the accuracy of detection and leading to better patient outcomes.
Why early detection is important
Early detection of prostate cancer greatly improves treatment outcomes. Here’s why it matters:
Higher success rates: Cancers caught early are easier to treat and have a better prognosis.
More treatment options: Early detection allows for less invasive treatments, leading to quicker recovery.
Better quality of life: Targeted treatments result in fewer side effects and faster recovery times.
Prevention of spread: Detecting cancer early reduces the risk of it spreading to other organs.
At OneMedicine, we prioritise early detection to ensure the best possible outcomes. Book a consultation today to take proactive steps in managing your health.
