Muscle and Bone Pain

Muscle and Bone Pain - Private GP Assessment in Birmingham
Muscle aches, joint pain, and “deep” bone pain can be caused by anything from strain and overuse to vitamin deficiencies, inflammation, infection, arthritis, or nerve-related pain. If your symptoms are persistent, worsening, or affecting daily life, a focused GP assessment can help you get answers quickly – and a clear plan.
At OneMedicine (Edgbaston, Birmingham), we offer unhurried private GP appointments, with fast access to blood tests and onward referral when needed.
When muscle and bone pain needs checking
It’s worth booking an assessment if you have:
✔ Pain lasting more than 2-4 weeks
✔ Recurrent flare-ups that keep returning
✔ Morning stiffness, swollen joints, or reduced movement
✔ Widespread aches with fatigue, sleep issues, or “brain fog”
✔ Pain after a viral illness that isn’t settling
✔ Pain plus numbness, tingling, or weakness
✔ Concerns about arthritis, gout, osteoporosis, or inflammation
Red flags - seek urgent help
Please seek urgent medical advice (A&E/999 if severe) if you have:
✔ Chest pain, severe breathlessness, or sudden collapse
✔ New severe weakness, loss of bladder/bowel control, or groin numbness
✔ A hot, swollen joint with fever
✔ Unexplained weight loss, night sweats, or persistent fevers
✔ Severe pain after trauma, or inability to weight-bear
✔ Known cancer history with new, unexplained bone pain
Common causes we assess
Your GP will tailor the assessment to your symptoms, but common causes include:
Muscle strain / overuse, posture-related pain, sports injury
Tendon or ligament problems (tendinopathy, bursitis)
Back and neck problems (including nerve irritation)
Inflammatory arthritis (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis)
Osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear joint pain)
Vitamin D deficiency and other nutritional deficiencies
Thyroid problems and other metabolic causes
Gout or crystal arthritis
Fibromyalgia / chronic widespread pain (multifactorial pain sensitisation)
Post-viral syndromes where aches persist after infection
What happens in your appointment
We keep things structured and practical:
✔ Detailed symptom history (pattern, triggers, morning stiffness, swelling, sleep, fatigue)
✔ Examination of joints, muscles, spine and nerves
✔ Review of medical history, medications, training/activity and work ergonomics
✔ A clear differential diagnosis and step-by-step plan
Blood tests we commonly use
If appropriate, we can arrange targeted blood tests, for example:
✔ Full Blood Count (FBC)
✔ Inflammation markers (CRP, ESR)
✔ Kidney and liver function
✔ Bone profile (calcium, phosphate, ALP)
✔ Vitamin D, B12, folate, ferritin
✔ Thyroid function tests
✔ Creatine kinase (CK) for muscle inflammation/injury
✔ Uric acid (gout)
✔ Autoimmune screening when indicated (e.g., RF, anti-CCP, ANA)
Imaging and referral when needed
If your symptoms suggest a structural problem or need specialist input, we can guide you on the right next step – which may include imaging (e.g., X-ray/ultrasound/MRI) or referral pathways (orthopaedics, rheumatology, neurology, physiotherapy)..
Treatment - a plan you can act on
Your management plan may include:
✔ Pain relief options tailored to you (including safety with other conditions/medications)
✔ Activity modification and a graded return to exercise
✔ Targeted rehab advice and physiotherapy direction
✔ Addressing contributory factors (sleep, stress, posture, training load)
✔ Deficiency correction where relevant (e.g., vitamin D)
✔ Clear follow-up and escalation if symptoms change
