Chlamydia testing
Chlamydia is a common and easily treatable sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis. Often, it shows no symptoms at all—so regular testing is key for anyone who’s sexually active.
If left untreated, chlamydia can lead to serious complications, especially for women, including infertility and ectopic pregnancy. The good news? Early detection makes treatment simple and effective.

Chlamydia is an STI that affects both men and women. It can cause permanent damage to a woman’s reproductive system, making it difficult or impossible to get pregnant later in life. In severe cases, it can lead to an ectopic pregnancy, where the pregnancy occurs outside the womb, which can be life-threatening.
Chlamydia is transmitted through vaginal, anal, or oral sex with an infected partner. It can also be passed from a pregnant person to their baby during childbirth, leading to complications like eye infections or pneumonia in the newborn.
The only guaranteed way to avoid chlamydia is to abstain from sex. For sexually active individuals, reducing your risk involves being in a mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who has tested negative for STIs, and consistently using condoms during sexual activity.
Anyone who is sexually active can get chlamydia, but certain groups are at higher risk, including:
- Young adults under 25.
- Gay and bisexual men.
- Individuals with new or multiple sexual partners.
- People with partners who have STIs.

Signs and symptoms of chlamydia
Chlamydia often shows no symptoms, but when it does, they can appear weeks after exposure. In women, symptoms may include abnormal vaginal discharge or a burning sensation when urinating. Men may experience discharge from the penis, pain when urinating, or swelling in the testicles. Both men and women can develop rectal infections from chlamydia, causing pain, discharge, or bleeding.
Chlamydia in pregnancy
Chlamydia can pose serious risks during pregnancy, potentially causing early delivery or passing the infection to the baby. Pregnant individuals should be tested for chlamydia at their first prenatal visit to protect both mother and baby.
Diagnosis and treatment
What happens if chlamydia is left untreated?
Chlamydia is diagnosed through a laboratory test, either by a urine sample or a swab. If you test positive, treatment with antibiotics will cure the infection. It’s important to take all of the prescribed medication and avoid sexual activity until you and your partner have completed treatment to prevent reinfection.

If not treated, chlamydia can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women, which may result in infertility, ectopic pregnancy, or chronic pelvic pain. Men can experience complications like fever or inflammation of the tubes connected to the testicles, though serious health issues are less common. Untreated chlamydia can also increase the risk of contracting or spreading HIV.
