Hepatitis refers to inflammation of the liver, which can be caused by viral infections like Hepatitis A, B, and C. Each type is transmitted differently, but Hepatitis B and C can be spread through sexual contact, making regular testing crucial for sexually active individuals, particularly those in higher-risk groups.
Hepatitis A is primarily spread through consuming contaminated food or water, but it can also be transmitted through sexual activity, particularly through oral-anal contact. While Hepatitis A is a short-term infection, it can still cause significant illness.
Symptoms may include fever, fatigue, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), and nausea.
Testing for hepatitis A involves a simple blood test to check for antibodies that indicate an active or past infection. If you’re sexually active and at risk of contracting Hepatitis A, getting vaccinated and tested regularly is recommended.
Hepatitis B is commonly transmitted through sexual contact, particularly unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex with an infected person. It can also be spread through contact with infected blood, such as sharing needles or razors. Hepatitis B can cause both acute and chronic infections, leading to severe liver damage if left untreated.
Testing for hepatitis B involves a blood test to detect the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), which indicates an active infection. Early diagnosis can help manage the infection and prevent long-term liver damage. Vaccination is available and highly effective in preventing Hepatitis B, making it an essential step in protecting your sexual health.
Hepatitis C is less commonly transmitted through sexual contact, but it is possible, especially through unprotected sex with multiple partners or in the presence of other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Hepatitis C is most often spread through contact with infected blood, such as through sharing needles. Chronic hepatitis C infections can lead to serious liver complications, including cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Testing for hepatitis C involves a blood test to check for antibodies that indicate exposure to the virus. Further testing may be done to determine if the infection is active. Hepatitis C is curable with modern antiviral treatments, making early testing and diagnosis crucial for managing your health.

Why Hepatitis Testing Matters
Many people with Hepatitis B or C don’t know they’re infected because symptoms often don’t appear until the liver has already been affected. That’s why regular testing is key—it helps catch infections early, so you can get the care you need to stay healthy.
Testing is especially important if you:
- Are sexually active with new or multiple partners
- Have unprotected sex
- Share needles or injecting equipment
- Are a man who has sex with men
- Have a partner with hepatitis
- Are living with HIV (co-infection with Hepatitis B or C is more common in people with HIV)
Making hepatitis testing part of your routine sexual health check-up is a simple but powerful step. Early detection can prevent serious health problems and protect both you and your partners. We’re here to help every step of the way.
