Long-Term Sugar Control (HbA1c) Testing
The HbA1c test, also known as the long-term sugar marker test, is one of the most important tools for diagnosing and monitoring diabetes. It measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months, providing a more complete picture of how well your body is managing glucose. Whether you’re being tested for diabetes for the first time or managing the condition, the HbA1c test helps guide your treatment and ensures you stay on track with your health.
Cost
- HbA1c blood test £53.50 (includes Phlebotomy)
- Focused GP appointment (15min) £75
- Standard GP appointment (30min) £120
What is the HbA1c test?
The HbA1c test measures the amount of glucose (sugar) that is attached to your red blood cells. Since red blood cells live for around 2-3 months, this test gives a longer-term view of your blood sugar levels, unlike other tests that measure your blood sugar at a single point in time. A higher HbA1c level means more sugar is present in your blood, which can indicate diabetes or poor control of the condition.
What does the HbA1c result mean?
- Normal: An HbA1c level below 5.7% is considered normal, indicating healthy blood sugar levels.
- Prediabetes: An HbA1c level between 5.7% and 6.4% suggests prediabetes, meaning you’re at higher risk of developing diabetes without lifestyle changes.
- Diabetes: An HbA1c level of 6.5% or higher typically indicates diabetes.
If you already have diabetes, the goal is usually to keep your HbA1c level below 7% to ensure your condition is being well-managed.
Who should get the HbA1c test?
The HbA1c test is recommended for:
– People showing symptoms of diabetes, such as increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, or blurred vision.
– Those with a family history of diabetes or risk factors like being overweight, having high blood pressure, or leading a sedentary lifestyle.
– Individuals already diagnosed with diabetes who need regular monitoring to ensure their treatment is effective.
– Anyone over 40 as part of routine health checks, as the risk of type 2 diabetes increases with age.
How is the test performed?
The HbA1c test is simple and quick. It requires a small blood sample, usually taken from a vein in your arm. You don’t need to fast for this test, so it can be done at any time of day. After the sample is collected, it’s sent to the lab for analysis. Results are usually available within a few days, and your doctor will review them with you to explain what they mean and discuss any necessary next steps.
How often should you have an HbA1c test?
If you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, it’s recommended to have the HbA1c test every 3 to 6 months to monitor your blood sugar control. If you’re being tested for diabetes for the first time, your doctor may recommend an HbA1c test if other blood sugar tests show borderline results or if you’re at risk of developing diabetes.
