What is a gynaecology ultrasound?
A gynaecology ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of your pelvic organs. It’s completely safe and non-invasive, giving your doctor valuable insight into your reproductive health.
There are two types of scans:
✔ Transabdominal ultrasound – A handheld device moves over your abdomen to capture images.
✔ Transvaginal ultrasound – A small probe is gently inserted into the vagina for a closer, more detailed look.
Both scans are quick, painless, and designed to give you the answers you need.
Why might you need a gynaecology ultrasound?
If you’ve been experiencing pelvic pain, irregular periods, or discomfort, a gynaecology ultrasound can help uncover the cause. It’s often used to check for:
✔ Ovarian cysts – Fluid-filled sacs that may cause bloating or pain.
✔ Fibroids – Non-cancerous growths in the uterus that can lead to heavy periods or discomfort.
✔ Endometriosis – A condition where tissue similar to the womb lining grows outside the uterus, often causing severe pain or fertility issues.
Other common reasons for a scan include:
- Pelvic pain – Ongoing or recurring pain in the lower abdomen.
- Irregular bleeding – Unusually heavy, prolonged, or unpredictable periods.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) – A hormonal imbalance that can affect ovulation and cause irregular periods.
Ultrasounds can also provide essential monitoring for women undergoing fertility treatment or those needing routine post-menopausal health checks.
What to expect during your scan
The process is simple and stress-free:
✔ Preparation – For a transabdominal scan, you may need a full bladder. No preparation is needed for a transvaginal scan.
✔ The scan – A cool gel is applied to your abdomen for a transabdominal scan, while a small probe is gently used for a transvaginal scan.
- Duration – The scan usually takes 15-30 minutes.
- Afterwards – You can get straight back to your day. Your doctor will review the images and discuss the results with you.
Safe, comfortable, and reassuring
Gynaecology ultrasounds are completely safe, using sound waves instead of radiation. The procedure is painless, with no side effects, making it suitable for women of all ages, including those who are pregnant.
