High Resolution CT Scan in Birmingham
Crystal-clear imaging for precise diagnosis
A High-Resolution CT (HRCT) scan is an advanced imaging test that provides incredibly detailed views of your lungs and other areas of the body. Whether assessing lung conditions like fibrosis, emphysema, or interstitial lung disease, or evaluating certain types of cancer, HRCT delivers the clarity needed for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

What is a high resolution CT scan?
HRCT uses cutting-edge technology to capture ultra-thin slices of your body, producing high-definition images of organs and tissues. For lung conditions, it provides a detailed look at the airways, blood vessels, and lung structures – revealing abnormalities that might not appear on a standard X-ray.
Why might you need a HRCT?
We may recommend an HRCT scan if you have:
- Persistent or unexplained respiratory symptoms, such as shortness of breath or a chronic cough
- Abnormal findings on a chest X-ray or spirometry test
- A history of lung infections, fibrosis, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- A need for further evaluation of suspected lung cancer or other serious lung conditions
What to expect during the scan?
The procedure is quick, non-invasive, and typically takes just 10-20 minutes. You’ll lie comfortably on a table as the CT scanner moves around you, capturing detailed images. It’s completely painless—though you may be asked to hold your breath briefly to ensure the clearest images.
Benefits of an HRCT scan
An HRCT scan offers unparalleled detail, helping doctors:
✔ Detect lung conditions early, allowing for timely treatment
✔ Identify abnormalities with precision for a more accurate diagnosis
✔ Plan treatments more effectively, leading to better health outcomes
How is a HRCT performed?
Preparation – You may be asked to wear a gown and remove any metal objects. No special preparation is needed unless advised otherwise.
Positioning – You’ll lie on a table that slides into the CT scanner. The technician may ask you to hold your breath briefly for clearer images.
Imaging process – The scanner takes high-resolution images as the table moves through it, capturing thin slices of your lungs or chest. The entire process takes around 10-20 minutes.
After the scan – You can return to your normal activities right away. Your doctor will review the images and discuss the results with you.
Fast. Painless. Precise
If you need clear answers about your lung health, an HRCT scan provides the insight you need—quickly and accurately.
