What is an X-ray?
An X-ray is a quick and painless imaging test that uses a small dose of radiation to capture images of the inside of your body. It’s especially effective for examining bones and joints, but it’s also used to assess the lungs, heart, and abdomen.
How it works:
- A controlled amount of radiation passes through your body.
- Dense structures, like bones, appear white on the image.
- Softer tissues appear in varying shades of grey, providing a clear picture of the area being examined.
Are X-rays safe?
Yes. X-rays use very low levels of radiation, and the benefits of early diagnosis far outweigh any minimal risk. To ensure your safety, we use the lowest possible dose and may provide protective measures, such as lead aprons, if needed – especially for children or pregnant women.
Why might you need an X-ray?
X-rays are used to diagnose a wide range of conditions, from fractures to lung infections. If you’ve had an injury, are experiencing persistent pain, swelling, or breathing difficulties, an X-ray can help uncover the cause and guide treatment.
They are commonly used to assess:
✔ Bone fractures – Clear images show the extent of a break or injury.
✔ Joint dislocations & arthritis – Helps diagnose joint problems, including dislocations or wear and tear due to arthritis.
✔ Lung infections – Detects conditions like pneumonia and fluid buildup in the lungs.
✔ Heart abnormalities – Assesses heart size and shape to help diagnose cardiac conditions.
✔ Digestive system issues – Can identify blockages or other abnormalities in the abdomen.
X-rays are also essential in dental care, helping assess tooth and jaw health, and are widely used for routine screenings and post-injury assessments.
How is an X-ray performed?
The process is simple, fast, and completely painless:
✔ Positioning – Depending on the area being scanned, you may be asked to sit, stand, or lie down.
✔ The scan – The X-ray machine is positioned, and you may need to hold still or briefly hold your breath while the image is taken.
✔ Duration – The scan itself lasts just a few seconds.
✔ Afterwards – You can return to your normal activities immediately. Your doctor will review the images and discuss the results with you.
